South Tipperary Co Museum

Originally founded in the late 1940’s South Tipperary County Museum relocated to Mick Delahunty Square in 2000, as the first purpose built County Museum in Ireland.  The Museum aims to collect, record, preserve, display and interpret the history of South Tipperary.  The Museum’s permanent gallery traces the history and heritage of the region from prehistoric to modern times.  The temporary gallery hosts several in house and borrowed exhibitions every year covering a wide variety of subjects.  A lively outreach programme accompanies each exhibition, as well as regular events celebrating traditional feast days and calendar customs.  Many items are donated to the Museum every year and currently the collection consists of approx 25,000 objects relevant to the history of South Tipperary.  The Museum galleries and store are environmentally controlled and a Conservator is employed to ensure the preservation of the collection. Objects, photographs and documents etc held in the Museum collection are available to researchers wishing to find out more about aspects of local heritage.
