Our Local History

Tipperary Studies located in The Source, Cathedral Street, Thurles is a reference library and research centre dedicated to the collection of material on all aspects of County Tipperary.  This collection includes published books, journals, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual material microform, manuscripts and ephemera.   All aspects of the entire county are covered from archaeology, history, topography and social studies.  Old local newspapers paint a vivid picture of the history of the county through sports, economic social and personal issues.  Photographs and postcards provide snapshots of towns and villages of other days.  Genealogy and Family history sources include the 1901 and 1911 Census returns, which also provide an insight into the education, religion and occupations of the people of the period.  Changes in the landscape may be studies through Ordnance Survey Maps.  All are welcome!

Tipperary Studies is open six days a week; there is no membership fee, merely a small charge for any photocopies supplied.
