Don’t be afraid of Biodiversity this Halloween!

The day will start at 2pm with a “Don’t Be Afraid of BioDiversity” talk and hands on make and do, the themes are Barn Owls and Bats. This will be followed by gory stories and horrible history from archaeologist Joanne Hughes O’Brien at 3 pm.  Make sure you dress up warm and put on the wellies for a ghostly treasure hunt around the Cashel Palace grounds at 3:30 pm.

At the same time, should you be a little bit big for the  treasure hunting there is a fascinating look at the history of Barm Brack at the Heritage Centre; with a chance to try the famous cake and maybe even stir a pot or two of  the gooey mixture.

Between 4 -5 pm there will be traditional fun and games on the Plaza with Halloween boxes, Apple games and Carved Pumpkins, piñata and more.

Make sure to have your fancy dress on and line up for a parade around the town at 5pm, ghosts, goblins and pookas of all shapes and sizes meet on the plaza at 5pm.

From 6-7 there will be a warm welcome in the back of Mikey Ryan’s for  children over the age of  eight and do please bring a grown up with you. Biddy McLoughney will be there to tell you scary  stories, which begin with that traditional opener “In My Father’s Time...”.

When things get truly dark around 7pm the will be more fun on the Plaza with hot food and a ghoulish discos to close out the evening.

Make no bones about it Cashel is the Place to Bee on Halloween!

Talking Trees: Celebrating Autumn and our Love of Trees.

From the 23rd October and coming up to Halloween , the Common Thread Café at 15 Parnell street will be hosting ‘Talking Trees’, a week of tree-related activities, aimed at people of all ages who hopefully will come out of the woodwork to share their love and interest in trees! A seasonal window display and information on how to grow trees will be the first indicators of what is in store inside.

Starting on Sat 23 rd from 11 to 1pm, members of the public are invited to visit the café to share, draw, write down tree stories and memories in order to celebrate the variety of ways in which trees are an important part of their lives. We hope to turn the café into a tree lovers’ den by decorating the resident tree with stories, displaying them in imaginative ways for others to experience throughout the week. Tea, coffee and hot apple juice will be available for a donation.

This will be followed by the ‘Talking Trees’ seminar from 2 to 4 pm, in conversation with Native Woodland Specialist and Woodsculptor Andrew St Ledger, who is PRO of the Woodland League - a not for profit NGO dedicated to restoring native woodlands. A question and answer session regarding forestry/ woodland/tree issues will be part of the event. Leaving at 4.15 pm from the Common Thread café, weather permitting, there will be a walk to Suir Island to discover the island’s trees and other heritage aspects. Bring munchies for breaktime.

From Tuesday 26 to Thursday 28 October from 2.30 to 4.30 pm, we will hold family Leaf and Bark art-making workshops. Children and their parents will be invited to make leafy masks and barky mobiles.  Tree stories will be read or shared during that time and those who haven’t contributed to the café’s tree can do so then.  The Tree stories captured will be posted on the South Tipperary County Council Heritage Website.

Coffee, Tea, Juice will be available throughout the week for a donation. All events are on a donation basis. The Café, events and workshops are kept going through small grants and donations left by those who visit. This particular series of events is supported by South Tipperary County Council Heritage Office and the Heritage Council.

AGM of Tipperary Historical Society and Launch of Tipperary Historical Journal in the Source, Thurles on Saturday 30th October at 2:30pm.

The County Tipperary Historical Society will have their AGM and launch the 2010 Tipperary Historical Journal at The Source, Thurles, on Saturday 30 October, 2:30PM. This year's Journal contains a very wide range of very interesting articles and reviews.  Dr. Denis Marnane's research on Seán Treacy's family in Sologhead represents ground- breaking research into the passions and tensions which surrounded every aspect of land ownership within a famous Tipperary family in the nineteenth century.

Danny Grace has an absorbing article on the last woman hanged in Co. Tipperary.  The Journal of 2010 is very fortunate to have a number of new writers.  Nancy Leahy who has long been involved in the world of amateur dramatics has a very interesting piece on the touring theatrical companies who visited the county during the Emergency.  From Niall Sharkey's contribution we get an unique insight into life in the Curragh internment camp [Tintown] during the Civil War, by means of his father's autograph book.  Alice McDermott has a deep and abiding interest in Charles Bianconi.  Her contribution to this year's Journal gives a very interesting analysis of the business acumen of the of the nineteenth century picture salesman turned transport entrepreneur.

The Journal also contains the usual book reviews. On a poignant note Dr. Willie Nolan pays a glowing and very well deserved tribute to the late Marcus Bourke, the man who occupied the Editor's chair when the Journal was launched in 1988.

Chuaigh Marcus ar shlí na fírinne cúpla mí ó shoin. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
