Waterways Forward Regional Analysis of the River Suir

South Tipperary County Council is one of 17 European partners in an INTERREG IVC project – Waterways Forward. The main objective of Waterways Forward is to improve the management of regional inland waterways and the regions adjacent to them by promoting an integrated, sustainable and participatory approach, taking account of the multi-functional role of waterways. The main objective for South Tipperary County Council is to look at the heritage tourism potential of the river and its hinterland. There are short, medium and long term goals: Promotion of existing walking routes along the river; developing the tow path as a public amenity and in the long term looking at the navigational potential of the river for shallow draught craft.

Here in South Tipperary County Council we are looking at the Heritage Tourism potential of the River Suir. The project will consider how the natural environment, ecology and cultural heritage of waterways can be enhanced and how inland waterways can contribute to both the local economy and the challenges posed by climate change. Through the sharing and transfer of good practices between the 17 project partners, integrated regional strategies and action plans will be created to support the on-going development of the multi-functional use of Europe’s inland waterways, with the aim of enhancing the quality of life of its citizens.

As part of this process a Regional Analysis was undertaken of the River Suir and its stakeholders by South Tipperary County Council Heritage Office. Our main study area is the stretch of river between Carrick-on-Suir and Clonmel.
